New FVUW Directors Bring Fundraising,Agency Management Skills to Board

Two individuals who experiences “encompass the full scope of social services philanthropy” have joined the Fox Valley United Way Board of Directors.  The two are Cheryl Johnson, retired executive director/public health administrator at the Kendall County Health Department, and Daryl Heppner, Central Region Air Manager for UPS (United Parcel Service).

FAMILYWIZE PARTNERSHIP SAVES ON PRESCRIPTION COSTS

Fox Valley United Way - Familywize Partnership helps save local residents $495,694 in healthcare costs!  Savings from Free Prescription Discount Card Goes Way Beyond Cost of Drugs.  Every dollar patients spend on prescription drugs to treat heart disease and diabetes saves them $3 to $10 on other medical services, according to a 2011 Health Affairs study cited by Fox Valley United Way and FamilyWize, two organizations that are partnering to help families stay healthy.

UNITED WAY HURRICANE SANDY RECOVERY FUND

With leadership from United Way of New York City, United Ways along the Eastern Seaboard have established the United Way Hurricane Sandy Recovery Fund to address near-term and long-term recovery needs of communities most affected by the hurricane.

Four Civic Leaders Join Fox Valley United Way Board

Four individuals who each have an impressive range of leadership skills and community involvement have joined the Board of Directors of Fox Valley United Way.  One of the four, Cheryl Maraffio, is a former Fox Valley United Way Director and winner of the prestigious Rita Anderson Smith award for leadership, creativity and dedication. Maraffio has been closely involved in youth anti-violence and Victim Services programs in the Aurora-Fox Valley community.

Early Childhood Collaboration Names First Director

Patricia (Trish) Rooney has joined Fox Valley United Way as the first director of SPARK (Strong, Prepared And Ready for Kindergarten), the Aurora Early Childhood Collaboration.  Announced earlier this year by a coalition of leading civic organizations – Fox Valley United Way, the Dunham Fund, the City of Aurora and the four school districts that educate the vast majority of Aurora children – SPARK seeks to improve the school readiness skills of local pre-school age children.  Those skills, Rooney said, center on early literacy, math, social and emotional skills.

St. Charles Attorney Joins Fox Valley United Way's Board

Julie Proscia, an attorney and partner in the St. Charles office of Chicago-headquartered law firm SmithAmundsen, has been elected to the Board of Directors of Fox Valley United Way. SmithAmundsen specializes in business and insurance defense.  In addition to Chicago and St. Charles, the firm has offices in Milwaukee, St. Louis, Rockford and Woodstock.

Fox Valley United Way, City of Aurora and Schools Unveil Early Childhood Education Initiative

The Dunham Fund will provide up to $250,000 in matching grants. A two-year matching grant program that has the potential to raise as much as $500,000 for early childhood learning programs aimed at Aurora preschoolers was announced today by Fox Valley United Way (FVUW) and the Dunham Fund.

Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP)

As we approach the upcoming holiday season, please think about the millions of families who are in need of housing and food assistance.  Shelves of food pantries across the country are bare.  Programs that provide utility and rental assistance are running out of funds to help people.

Kendall County Leader Joins Board of Directors

John Church, former chairman of the Kendall County Board and an individual with a lifetime's interest in how people interact with natural resources and agriculture, has joined the Board of Directors of Fox Valley United Way.  While on the County Board, he also served for several years as President of the Kendall County Forest Preserve District.  Church's experience in the Kendall Co.

Early Learning Strategy

Most of the discussions about education focus on high school and college diplomas. But the key to schooling success may start much earlier: Children who are behind when they start kindergarten are less likely to graduate from high school or go to college, more likely to end up as teen mothers, or commit violent crimes.
